My approach to your counselling

Whilst my practice is based in humanistic person-centred philosophy, placing you at the centre of our work together, I can also draw on other styles of counselling such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Transactional Analysis to bring you an individual approach that is right for you.

Person-centred Counselling

Person-centred counselling aims to help you develop the self-awareness and confidence to help you understand why you think and behave as you do, what you might do to challenge that and what changes you can make in your life to overcome the issues you are facing. We will examine what influences there have been through your life, for example parents, teachers, work colleagues or the working and social environments you’ve been exposed to from the distant past to current day, and try to understand how your beliefs started and how you’ve developed into the person you are today. As your counsellor, I will help you explore your issues, feelings, beliefs, behaviour and worldview, bringing you more understanding of yourself and what might be affecting your mental health.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

CBT examines the way you think and how those thoughts influence your behaviour. We can examine any negative thinking patterns that are not helpful to you and which you may feel trapped in by challenging and altering the way you think about certain situations, helping you to think more rationally and hopefully feel better.

Transactional Analysis

Transactional Analysis categorises the human personality into three ego states- Parent, Adult and Child. This approach can be very helpful for relationships of any kind, helping you to understand how you may be interacting in relationships in your life and what you might do to change them for the better.

The Counselling Relationship Matters

My aim as your counsellor is to build a relationship of trust where you can feel comfortable to be your real self. You will not be judged, no matter what you bring to your counselling. You will be listened to with empathy and in a calm, understanding way and be understood for who you really are.

You will be offered a safe and confidential space free from outside pressures where you can really feel heard. With my support you will enjoy time and space to:

  • Explore feelings and emotions without fear of being judged

  • Develop a better understanding of yourself and what might have led you to feel like you do

  • Determine what you want from your life going forward and how you might achieve that.
